GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Fishery stakeholders have released some 1.5 million milkfish or "bangus" fry into the Sarangani Bay to help increase its population.
Alfeo Piloton, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Region 12, said Thursday the milkfish fry were dispersed early this week in the coastal waters of Barangay Lun Masla, Malapatan town in Sarangani province.
He said the release was made in collaboration with aquaculture firm Finfish Hatcheries Inc.(FHI), local officials, and community residents.
Piloton said the “seeding” of the Sarangani Bay was aimed to expand the area’s fish stocks, which is the main source of livelihood of coastal residents in Malapatan and the neighboring municipalities.
"Our main purpose is to provide food for everyone,” he said in a report from the Sarangani Information Office.
He said it was in line with the continuing rollout of the Department of Agriculture’s "Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita” program, the key driver of the national government’s food security agenda.
Piloton said the bangus stocks were donated by the FHI, which is a member of the Alcantara Group’s agribusiness unit.
Dorie Ticao, FHI operations manager, said the company will continue to assist the government in replenishing the area’s dwindling fish population.
She said the problem can be attributed to overfishing and the illegal fishing activities in parts of Sarangani Bay.
"We do this on a regular basis. This is our way of helping our government increase the fishery resources in Sarangani Bay. We’re also bringing back the blessings provided by the bay,” Ticao said.
In June 2017, FHI also released giant "lapu-lapu" (grouper) spawners in a marine protected area off Maasim town to help replenish its population in the area. Allen Estabillo
