2 Davao City barangays declared drug-clear

DAVAO CITY -- The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 11 declared Barangay Sirib and Dacudao in Calinan District as drug-clear areas after all drug surrenderers in the area tested negative in a series of drug tests.

PDEA 11 Regional Director Antonio Rivera said the 60 drug surrenderers in Sirib and 20 in Ducadao all tested negative in all drug test through the efforts of the barangay to rehabilitate their constituents.

Rivera said one of the criteria for declaring a barangay clear of drugs is the establishment of a rehabilitation program for drug surrenderers after undergoing a rehabilitation program with the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC).

“The continuity of the program is very vital. After the surrenderers undergo the rehabilitation program of CADAC they need the support of the barangay to continue their rehabilitation,” Rivera said.

He added that despite the declaration of the two barangays as drug-clear, PDEA will still continue to monitor the areas.

If a single resident tests positive, PDEA will give the barangay a one-month grace period to extend all efforts to fix the problem.

“They can talk to the one who tested positive and make interventions. If after a month they cannot do anything then we will rebirth the barangay,” Rivera said.

CADAC action man Michael Denton Aportadera said the support of the community is vital since the continuity of the program relies upon the people.

“These efforts are all made to attain our goal of making Davao City hopefully as drug free or drug clear,” he said.

Barangay Sirib chief Marcelina Antogop said one of their efforts is to continue the rehabilitation program and to give spiritual intervention to the surrender.

“We really have a spiritual adviser or leader that will talk to them to help them enlighten their life,” Antogop said.
