6 arrested for illegal fishing in waters off Davao Oriental

DAVAO CITY -- A joint police and volunteers “Bantay Dagat” (fish warden) arrested six suspected illegal fishers at the waters of Barangay Santa Fe, Caraga in Davao Oriental over the weekend, police said.
Bantay Dagat is a civilian fisheries patrol force made up of volunteers that keep watch on coastal waters up to 15 kilometers from shore line of coastal communities.
Caraga chief of police Captain Fidelito Viola Jr. identified the suspects as Gelito Igou Tubo, 50; Rodolfo Alfonso Mao, 46; Sigfrid Dolosa Sotto, 40; Robin Tubo Pinsan, 25; Ramil Tubo Pinsan, 40; and Carlo Honasan Flores, 33.
All are residents of Purok Baybay, Barangay Lucod, Baganga Davao Oriental.
Authorities confiscated 10 kilos of assorted fish, four flashlights, five improvised spear guns, one ice box, and a pump boat from the suspects.
The six will be charged for violating Republic Act 8550 or the Fisheries Code of the Philippines.
Viola encouraged the community especially those living in coastal areas to report such activities immediately to the authorities.
