DAVAO CITY -- Nine people were killed while two others were seriously wounded when a trailer truck wing van loaded with sacks of rice lost its brakes and plowed into eight other vehicles at the junction of Matina Pangi Road and Carlos P. Garcia Highway in Davao City at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) said eight of the victims died on the spot. Seven of them were males while two others — including a two-year-old child — were females.
Another victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Two others were injured and are now in critical condition at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).
Initial investigation by DCPO traffic investigators showed the wing van, driven by 36-year-old Joel Sinampay Aras, a resident of Cagayan de Oro City, was moving along CP Garcia Highway from Sasa to Calinan when the vehicle lost its brakes near a gas station at Guadalupe Kilometer 5.
The out-of-control van then sped off, colliding with eight vehicles in the process at the junction of Matina Pangi Road and CP Garcia Highway.
DCPO spokesperson Police Captain Maria Teresita Gaspan said the vehicles involved were a Toyota Hiace van, a Kia Sportage, a Honda CRV, a Mitsubishi L300, a TMX with sidecar, an Avanza, a Susuki AVP, and a multicab.
The wing van driver is now in the custody of the Talomo Police Station pending the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, serious physical injury, and damage to property. (Photos by Arjoy M. Ceniza)
