ADDU claims slim victory over St. John Paul II to win LYR Cup crown

DAVAO CITY -- The Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Blue Knights ended the Cinderella run of the St. John Paul II College of Davao Saints with a 94-90 victory to win the championship of the LYR Cup 2019 Inter-Collegiate Fiesta Basketball Tournament at the Rotary Gym in Tagum City on November 24.
Blue Knights guard Axel Doromal was hot all game long as he scored 29 points to carry his team to victory against the hard-fighting Saints.
Doromal, who was named the most valuable player in the finals, also had five steals in their championship win.
Former Jose Rizal University Heavy Bomber Stefan Steinl also added 15 points for the Blue Knights.
Saints sharpshooter Jessie Sabas scored 20 points mostly on three-point bombs in a losing effort for his team.
Meanwhile, in the battle for third, the Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings mauled the University of Mindanao Tagum Wildcats, 91-63 to finish third in the tournament.
Forward Gin Mejares scored 17 points to carry his team over the Wildcats, who were led by tournament MVP Richie Baldomero.
All the winners received medals, trophies, and cash prizes from the tournament organizer for their feat.
The tournament was organized in connection with the fiesta celebration of Tagum City.
