With face masks and face shields on, a reminder of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Araw ng Dabaw celebration goes on, marking a new chapter for Dabawenyos.

On Monday night, March 1, a grand digital celebration with performances from Davao City’s homegrown talents welcomed this year’s annual fete in a spectacular pre-recorded video production streamed online.

The opening ceremony featured Davao music, dances, and cultural performances from local artists and groups that centered on the best of Davao.

Before this, a flag-raising ceremony on the City Hall grounds was led by Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte in the morning with some government officials and employees, followed by ‘Misa Pasalamat’, a thanksgiving mass, at San Pedro Cathedral.

Mayor Sara Duterte, in an interview, thanked all Dabawenyos for being strong and resilient amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Pasalamat ko sa tanang Dabawenyos for being strong and resilient during this pandemic and kinahanglan magpadayon ta sa atong kusog as a city, as a people (I thanked all Dabawenyos for being strong and resilient during this pandemic. We need to continue to be strong as a city, as a people),” Duterte said, adding that Dabawenyos should remain unified to combat the global health crisis.

The 84th Araw ng Dabaw official theme song, “Dabaw Dabawenyo”, which highlights a unified Dabawenyos amid the struggle with the global health crisis, was also launched during the opening ceremony performed by Davao renowned artists.
