ZAMBOANGA CITY – An Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandit was killed in a clash that broke out Monday amid the government troops' continued focused military operations against the terrorist group in Sulu province, officials said.

Lt. Col. Ruben Guinolbay, the Army's 45th Infantry Battalion (45IB) commander, said the 9 a.m. firefight in Barangay Maligay, Patikul town ensued as the troops encountered more or less 30 ASG bandits while on combat operations.

Guinolbay said the five-minute clash resulted in the death of an ASG bandit and forced them to withdraw, leaving behind their dead comrade as well as war materiel, and personal belongings.

The bandits could have possibly incurred more casualties as shown in the bloodstains on their withdrawal path, he added.

Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command, said “government troops are maximizing our capabilities to address the different security challenges in our area of operation."

The troops are tracking down the fleeing bandits while the identity of the slain ASG bandit is being validated, Vinluan said. Teofilo Garcia Jr.
