DAVAO CITY -- The city of Atlanta in the United States donated to the city a larvicide that will prevent dengue carrying mosquitoes from proliferating.

City Health Office (CHO) head Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said the larvicide comes in a flower design that attracts mosquitoes and can stop its proliferation.

Villafuerte said the donation will be placed in the more than 600 day care centers in the city to prevent mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, filariasis, and many more from spreading.

She said the larvicide is effective, especially that it targets the larval life of the mosquitoes.

“Once the mosquitoes bite the larvicide they will die, and even if they will go to the water it will not allow them to become adults,” she said.

Villafuerte explained that the larvicide is a chemical that attracts mosquitoes and prevents them from becoming adults. Even its larvae will not grow once the mosquitoes bite into the larvicide.

“This is a big help since it can be a reason to decrease our dengue cases,” she said.

Villafuerte said spare larvicides can be placed in private children’s institutions and other schools.
