DAVAO CITY — A one-day charity golf tournament seeking to provide funds for children in an indigenous peoples’ community in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte tees off tomorrow, November 9 at the Apo Golf and Country Club here.

Banana Tee 2019, organized by the Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association (MBFEA), will provide financial assistance to Talos Elementary School in Barangay San Jose, Sto. Tomas.

MBFEA managing director Gladys Membrano-Garcia revealed an estimated 150 professional and amateur golfers from all over Mindanao are expected to join the friendly golf tournament which starts at 6:30 in the morning.

Appearing at the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Annex of SM City Davao on Thursday, Garcia said entries from General Santos City, Tagum City, and Zamboanga City will spice up the event.

"Winners of the golf tournament will receive trophies," Garcia added.

Garcia said aside from trophies some special prizes will also be raffled off for participating golfers and guests.

Participants will have a chance to win prizes such as a motorcycle and a laptop if they score a hole-in-one during the day-long tournament.

Meanwhile, MBFEA chairman Han Da Bae said aside from providing financial assistance to Talos Elementary School, the tournament will also help fund awareness drives on the importance of Cavendish bananas.

Bae said the Cavendish banana industry is currently threatened and the public needs to save it.

"The Cavendish banana is an export product. We need to protect it," Bae said.

Bae is hopeful the golf tournament will be a success and that the Cavendish banana industry in the region will continue to thrive.
