ZAMBOANGA CITY--The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is mourning the passing of Deputy Chief Minister Abdul Sahrin, described by Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim as a “dear friend and a brother” in the Bangsamoro struggle.

Ebrahim (Al Hadj Murad) said Sahrin, 70, died midnight Wednesday at the Zamboanga Peninsula Medical Center in Barangay Putik after a month-long battle with brain tumor.

Also known as “Hassan Jawali” and “Cong” to his comrades, Sarin served as a member of the 75-seat Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) parliament.

Ebrahim said Sahrin, the Moro National Liberation Front’s (MNLF) secretary-general, “was a key figure in fighting for our right to self-determination and working towards our shared vision of a peaceful and progressive Bangsamoro.”

“Brother Cong has been essential in helping us reach the island provinces and introduce our cause in building moral governance and a bureaucracy that can truly address the plight of the Bangsamoro people,” Ebrahim said.

“We will honor his life and legacy by making sure that our work for the people continues with the highest standard,” he said. “We join his bereaved family, friends, comrades, and followers in grieving his loss."

The BARMM government has yet to announce Sahrin's replacement as BARMM deputy chief minister.

“We will know when parliament convenes next week,” said Amir Mawallil, a colleague of Sahrin in the BTA. Teofilo Garcia, Jr.
