COTABATO CITY -- The Bangsamoro Autononous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is eyeing the development of world-class athletes in the near future, following the Mindanao Sports for Peace Caravan, which was officially launched by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) yesterday at the Cotabato City State Polytechnic College here.

Bangsamoro Sports Commission (BSC) chairman Norhan Uka said they are targeting the “upliftment of the image of sports in BARMM,” which is why they are making a conscious effort of engaging the region’s youth in different sports events.

In an interview, Uka said the caravan was initially supposed to be held in a different location in Mindanao. However, he said he is confident that Cotabato City will be able to handle such a responsibility.

He added that officials in Cotabato City and the rest of BARMM want to redirect the attention of the youth, especially those within the ages of 13 and 16 and train them in sports.

According to Uka, BARMM is also planning to start the construction of their very own sports complex in the third quarter of 2020.

Along with the sports complex will be the establishment of the Bangsamoro Sports Academy, which will give scholarships to children with athletic inclinations as well as training opportunities for them to become potential national athletes in the future.

The Mindanao Sports for Peace Caravan is part of the PSC’s effort to follow President Rodrigo Duterte’s mandate to bring sports to the periphery.
