Bong Go aids hundreds of fire victims in Manila City, reminds local officials to ensure sustained delivery of critical public services amid ongoing health crisis

Through a video message on Friday, April 30, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go offered his support to and solidarity with the families displaced by recent fire incidents in Manila City. He also discussed how to keep communities safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Go reminded local officials to ensure the continued delivery of critical public services to their constituents amid these trying times. He also urged them to provide timely assistance to those facing crisis situations and always prioritize the welfare of the poor and vulnerable sectors to ensure that no Filipino is left behind towards recovery.
The Senator’s outreach team distributed assistance to 54 families, comprised of 175 individuals, at the local covered courts in Barangays 51 and 352 and Zones 4 and 35.
The residents were provided with meals, masks, financial assistance, vitamin packs, and food packs while some attendees from among the poorest of the poor received bicycles. Go also provided computer tablets to children for their educational use.
He also urged the residents to utilize the services provided in Malasakit Centers, particularly the one nearest them located at the Philippine General Hospital. The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop initiated by Go and institutionalized into a law authored and sponsored by the senator to cater to the medical assistance needs of all Filipinos particularly poor and indigent patients.
It streamlines the process of acquiring assistance from different government agencies, namely, the Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
Meanwhile, to help the fire victims further, the DSWD also extended separate financial assistance through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program. The fire victims are likewise expected to receive further emergency aid from the Department of Trade and Industry and National Housing Authority.
Concluding his message, Go recognized the local officials for the assistance they extended to their affected constituents. Among those he acknowledged were Mayor Francisco M. Domagoso, Vice Mayor Maria Lacuña-Pangan, 1st District Representative Manuel Lopez, 51 Punong Barangay Rommel Bravo, and 352 Punong Barangay Roderick Suarez.
A similar activity was held in Sta. Cruz last March 22 for the fire victims of an earlier fire incident.
All distributions were conducted in small batches while strictly complying with the government-issued health and safety protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
Given the frequency of fire incidents in the country, Go filed Senate Bill No. 204 in 2019. The bill mandates the BFP to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government and local government units. It also provides the BFP with adequate funding for acquiring modern equipment, hiring new personnel, and providing specialized training.
