Senator Christopher “Bong” Go’s outreach teams were on hand in Metro Manila last week working closely with local government officials to provide support and address the needs of communities impacted by recent fire incidents.

“As I have often said, I will not limit myself to only serving as a Senator. Bilang public servant, magseserbisyo ako sa inyo kahit saan man kayo para tugunan ang inyong mga suliranin, pakinggan ang inyong mga hinaing, at mag-iwan ng ngiti sa oras ng inyong pagdadalamhati,” Go said in a video message.

“Para sa amin, walang tulog dapat ang serbisyo. Kahit anumang problema ang inyong kinakaharap, handa akong tumulong at magserbisyo sa inyo sa abot ng aking makakaya,” he continued.

The teams organized relief activities in Barangay Bayanan, Muntinlupa; Brgy. Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City; and Brgy. Olympia, Makati City on April 28 to 30, respectively. They distributed financial assistance, meals, food packs, vitamins, masks and face shields to a total of 44 families gathered in small batches while ensuring necessary health and safety protocols are in place.

Selected beneficiaries also received new pairs of shoes while others got bicycles, an alternative and convenient mode of transportation amid the pandemic. Others were provided computer tablets for their children to use for their classes under the blended learning set-up.

Personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also handed out financial assistance to each beneficiary family as part of an ongoing effort of the government to assist those in crisis situations.

To provide more government interventions so that every Filipino family has access to decent housing, Go continues to push for the passage of Senate Bill No. 203 or the ‘National Housing Development, Production and Financing Act’. The bill, which he filed in 2019, aims to accelerate housing production by ensuring reliable government funding and financing in the long-term.

The Senator also filed SBN 1227 or the ‘Rental Subsidy Program Act’ in the same year. SBN 1227 specifically seeks to provide displaced families with decent housing and help them sustain their livelihoods by offering them various housing financing options during the interim process of construction and relocation.

“Marami na akong napuntahang mga nasunugan at nawalan ng tirahan. Kailangan natin silang tulungan makabangon muli through low-cost housing programs, kasama na diyan ang housing assistance for fire victims at construction ng safe at permanent na evacuation centers,” explained Go.

“Kaya ko finile ang mga bills na ito dahil hangarin natin na wala nang squatter sa ating sariling bayan at magkaroon ang bawat pamilyang Pilipino ng isang maayos at disenteng bahay,” he continued.

To ensure their health and well-being, Go also offered to assist any beneficiary in need of medical attention and advised them to avail medical assistance from the government at their nearest Malasakit Center.

The center is a one-stop shop institutionalized by Go through legislation which provides convenient access to the medical assistance programs of the DSWD, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

A total of 20 Malasakit Centers have been established in Metro Manila, including at the National Center for Mental Health in Mandaluyong City and Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City. Currently, there are already 105 Malasakit Centers nationwide.

The Senator went on to recognize the local officials who extended their full cooperation and assistance to the families. Among those present during the activities were Bayanan Punong Barangay Adorado San Pedro, Addition Hills Punong Barangay Carlito Cernal, and Olympia Punong Barangay Vincent Dagdag.
