DAVAO CITY -- The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) raised concern over improper waste disposal that has resulted in the clogging up of the drainage system’s waterways and has led to street flooding.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, CDRRMO operations head Rodrigo Bustilo said barangays from Agdao district and Poblacion area are not following proper waste disposal as evidenced by street flooding during rainy days.

He said the floods are caused by trash that has been clogging the drainage system’s waterways.

Bustilo did not identify the specific barangays that are neglecting proper waste disposal procedures and not implementing envrironment ordinances.

He said it is “quite clear” that street flooding, particularly in barangays in Agdao district, was caused by the irresponsible disposal of garbage.

Bustilo said he fears that if this continues, the street flooding situation will worsen.

He called on barangay leaders to act on the problem to prevent adverse effects not only on commuters but also on the health of residents.

Bustilo told MDM the people should dispose of their trash responsibly and abide by the city’s rules and regulations on garbage management.

“Proper waste management practices should start in our barangay in order to prevent clogging up of drainage systems that may cause street flooding,” he said.

Bustilo said he appreciated other barangays that are strictly implementing and promoting proper solid waste management.
