Commodore Luz L Escarrilla is one of the two 'first female generals' of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) — a historical feat in its 119-year history of public service.

"This is the perfect time for the execution of God’s plan. Our PROMOTION is a BLESSING and an ANSWERED PRAYER for it proved that WOMEN are as EQUALLY EFFICIENT as men, even in male-dominated organizations, such as the PCG," Commodore Escarrilla said during a live television interview on 01 March 2021 or the first day of the 2021 National Women' Month.

Every year, the national government, through the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), spearheads various initiatives to emphasize the 'extraordinary roles' Filipinas perform in the society — may it be at home, in the workplace, or in their respective communities.

The PCG, through its gender and development (GAD) unit, ensures Coast Guardians, regardless of their gender, are given equal opportunities to grow and advance in their career, and are protected from all forms of gender-based discrimination or violence, as enshrined in the 1987 Constitution.

The Command recognizes the importance of women and the roles they perform towards the accomplishment of its mandates as a humanitarian armed service.

It flourishes a work environment that promotes gender equality and continues to keep its doors open to more Filipinas aspiring to become Coast Guardians in the future. PCG
