DAVAO DEL NORTE (PIA) –  Davao  del Norte 1st District Congressman Pantaleon D. Alvarez led the launching of the Voters’ Education Advocacy on Jan. 10, 2021 at the New City Hall Atrium in Tagum City.

In his speech at the event, Cong. Alvarez said people should look for the qualities of competence, heart, courage and conviction when choosing the next leaders.

He said that the next president must know how to bring back the economy, and he must know how to open the businesses again for people to have livelihood.

“Kinakailangan ngayong susunod na pangulo he must hit the ground running. Dapat meron siyang utak, may talino. Hindi na po siya dapat mag practice pa. On the job training, hindi na po pwede yan. Napaka bigat po ng problema…dapat ngayon pa lang alam na niya ang gagawin niya (The next president must hit the ground running. He has to have brains, intelligence. On the job training, that’s no longer allowed. The problem is so heavy…right now, he/she should already know what to do),” Alvarez said.

Aside from intelligence, he added that people must also look for a leader who has heart and compassion for the people especially the poor; one who can feel their suffering.

As well, he mentioned the importance of courage in solving the country’s problems.

“At syempre, kinakailangan yung susunod na pangulo ay may bayag. Meron siyang sapat na tapang para harapin ang malalaking problema sa ating bansa…para bigyang solusyon ang mga problemang ito. Ng kahit na sinong masasagasaan bastat para sa kabutihan, gagawin (Of course, the next president must have courage, enough courage to face and find solutions to the big problem in our country. That whoever he/she may have to run over for the sake of goodness, he/she will do),” Alvarez said.

Finishing his list of the necessary qualities in a leader, he emphasized that conviction must be seen from the next president.

“Pang apat, kinakailangan na may paninindigan. Dapat ang susunod na pangulo ay di manindigan para sa America, hindi para sa China. Manindigan siya para sa interest ng bayan kong Pilipinas (Fourth, conviction is important. The next president must stand not for America, not for China, but stand for the interest of the Philippines),” he said.

Apart from Cong. Alvarez, other personalities also spoke during the launch.

Filipino political scientist and De La Salle University Liberal Arts Dean of College, Dr. Julio Teehankee, shared similar sentiments citing competence, compassion, and character as the key qualities that the next president must possess.

He said that due to the pandemic, the next set of leaders have to face the challenge of saving the lives and restoring the livelihood of Filipinos.

In addition, Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Edwin I. Jubahib cited corruption, poverty, illegal drugs, rebellion, and criminality as well as education and agriculture problems as the challenges that must be solved by the next President.

He added that with the arrival of the pandemic, the current president’s fight against these issues were delayed and must be followed through by the successor.

“Dahil sa pandemyang ito, ang ating pangarap na matugonan ang matagal na suliranin ng bansa ay hindi matapos2 sa termino ng ating mahal na pangulo. Kaya sinabi ko kritikal po ito ang pagpili natin sa susunod na pangulo (Because of this pandemic, our dream to solve the issues that this country has faced for so long cannot be finished in our current president’s term. That’s why our choice on who his successor will be is critical),” Jubahib said.

Dubbed as “We Need a Leader”, the Voters’ Education  Advocacy was launched at the New City Hall Atrium, Tagum City yesterday, January 10, 2021 to educate the public on how to Choose the next set of National Leaders.
