DAVAO CITY -- The City Council is pushing for a temporary ban on the entry of hogs and hog products in Davao City while there are positive reports of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Luzon.

Agriculture committee chair Councilor Ralph Abella made the proposal on Tuesday, saying a temporary ban hogs and hog products will help prevent the spread of ASF in the city.

In an interview on Tuesday, Abella said he came up with the proposal in order to preserve the pork industry of Davao.

“We are not trying to cut the pork industry, what we want is to preserve the city’s hog industry. The swine selling will continue in the city as long as the entrance of other swines will be prohibited,” he said.

“Pork products which are already distributed here in the city will remain. We will not call for a recall. Only those products that haven’t entered the city will be banned temporarily,” he said.

Aside from the temporary banning of entry of hogs and hog products, the City Council also pushed to stop swill feeding to hogs, especially among backyard raisers.

“We are asking the restaurants to stop selling or giving swill to prevent the spread of ASF,” Abella said.

Abella, though, clarified that ASF has not yet entered the city and no cases have been recorded yet.
