MANILA – Public utility drivers, market vendors, and mall employees who tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) during the free mass swab testing program of the Manila city government will be provided assistance.

Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso made the assurance on Tuesday in a Facebook live.

“To all the public utility drivers like jeepney, sidecar, tricycle, bus, public market vendors and mall employees in the city of Manila, do not worry. All those who availed of the free mass swab testing program by the city government who will have a positive result for Covid-19, do not worry about the food for your family while you are inside the quarantine facilities, we will provide them with food assistance to assure that they will have food on the table,” Domagoso said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Domagoso said this is to appease those who have tested positive under the program of the city government who are mostly the breadwinners of their own families, and assured them that their families will not go hungry while they undergo quarantine.

He said families of those who turned out positive for Covid-19 will each receive a sack of rice and grocery items.

Domagoso said it has come to his attention that many drivers, vendors, and mall employees are hesitant to undergo the swab test because they fear that if they turn out positive, their families will have nothing to eat.

Isang pangamba ay paano pag nagpositibo, minimum 14 days na hindi makakapaghanapbuhay. Pano ang pamilyang umaasa, nauunawaan ko po kayo kaya minsan hindi na lang nagpapatest, pero mas mabuti na kayo’y ma-test (One worry is that when an individual becomes positive, he will not be able to work for at least 14 days. How about the family who depends on him? I understand you, but it is better that you undergo swab test), for your own peace of mind and of those people who may come near you,” he said.

Domagoso emphasized that those who tested positive will be given immediate care and medical attention in the city’s six public hospitals or quarantine facilities.

As of Tuesday, some 121 tested positive from the 4,830 drivers, mall employees, and market vendors from Manila’s 17 public markets who underwent the free swab test.

There are also those who are still waiting for their results.

Meanwhile, Domagoso advised individuals who tested positive to stop worrying because the probability of recovery is high.

"Focus on yourself. Magdasal kayo sa Panginoon Diyos. Tibayan niyo ang inyong damdamin. Marami pong nabubuhay, posible na mailigtas kayo. Mas maagap na malaman at maagap ding medical attention, it would be better for you and your family na possible niyong mahawa (Pray to God. Be strong. Many have recovered from this virus and it is very much possible that you will also survive. The earlier that we know your condition the better so we could give you immediate medical attention. It would be better for you and your family whom you may infect)," said Domagoso. Marita Moaje
