Davao City to aim for top 10 finish in National Paralympic Games

May 17, 2019 - Friday 1:05 PM by Romeo Braceros

Davao City hopes to barge into the top 10 in the forthcoming National Paralympic Games in Malolos, Bulacan on May 23 to June 1, 2019.

Having finished 14th in last year's National Paralympic Games in Marikina City, Davao City is confident it can surpass its output of 14 golds, 26 silvers, and seven bronzes in 2018.

Guesting before the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Annex of SM City Davao, Renah Vidamo expressed her confidence over the Davao City delegation’s performance in the coming games.

Vidamo, head of the city’s delegation to the games, said “Unlike last year where we only had 36 athletes and coaches, this year we have 51 athletes and coaches.”

She added that the added athletes and coaches improves Davao’s chances of winning medals in the various events included in the games.

She said Davao City could get its gold medals from world class paralympic swimmer Ernie Gawilan who won three gold medals last year, Noel Espanola from tenpin bowling, and other paralympic athletes from the city.

"Davao City will be competing in 10 events and will stay in Malolos Bulacan for 13 days," she said.

Among the events in the tournament are swimming, tenpin bowling, wheelchair basketball, archery, and badminton.

Vidamo said all of their athletes are 18 years old and above and will avail of allowances and uniforms from the city government during the duration of the tournament.

"The defending champion of this tournament is the National Capital Region but we will do our best to barge into the top 10 this year," Vidamo added.
