DAVAO CITY — Davao City native Samantha Umayan got a bronze medal finish in the recently concluded junior girls’ chess tournament under season 82 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) on October 27.

Umayan got the bronze medal as a board 2 player for the Far Eastern University (FEU) high school girls’ team.

Umayan’s performance also helped FEU secure a second-place finish in the team competition of the tournament behind champion National University.

A player’s board number corresponds to their rank in the team. Umayan’s status as a board 2 player means she is the team’s second-best player.

Before her bronze medal performance, the 12-year-old Umayan also helped the Philippines’ campaign in the 29th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Mandalay, Myanmar in June this year.

Umayan joined forces with Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian and Lovely Ann Heraldino to help the Philippines get 15 points in the international chess tournament, which was won by Vietnam.

In the girls’ 14-below standard division, the Davaoeña and her teammates scored 14 points behind the champion Vietnam team.

The Filipino trio also got another silver in the rapid division (11.5) behind champion Vietnam (16.5).

The resident of Barangay Buhangin got the slot to compete in the ASEAN chessfest after she got a bronze medal in the 2019 National Age-Group Chess Championships in Metro Manila.
