Cyril Gonzales, who used to play for the Holy Child College of Davao before being recruited by the National University (NU) Bullpups, showed an impressive performance on both ends in the Mapua University Cardinals’ close loss to the University of Perpetual Help Altas on Tuesday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Gonzales scored a total of 14 points in his first official collegiate basketball game, which led to the Cardinals’ 0-1 start to their NCAA 95 campaign.

Mapua was hot from beyond the arc in the first half, giving them a 45-39 advantage going into halftime. However, the Cardinals were unable to maintain their hot three-point shooting in the second half, going two for nine from long range.

Both teams found themselves tied at 69 points apiece at the 7:27 mark of the fourth period.

The Altas held on to take a 80-78 victory to open their season with a win, which will help their mission of making a return to the final four this season.

The Perpetual Altas, who are without last season’s MVP Prince Eze, had its lineup tested against Mapua.

However, 6’6” transferee Ben Adamos made up for it by making his presence felt in the paint.

In a post-game interview with ABS-CBN Sports, Perpetual head coach Frankie Lim said “Big game also from Adamos, Jielo, and Tonton. Sabi ko naman sa kanila, wala tayong star, we need team effort.”

Lim’s words evidently did not fall on deaf ears as the Altas distributed its offense among its players well, leading to their eventual victory.
