A promising 18-year-old judoka from Davao City made the Philippines proud after winning a bronze medal in the 2019 Judo Asian Cup Cadets and Juniors in Hong Kong on July 14.

Chino Sy Tancontian, a varsity athlete from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, won the bronze medal in the 81 kilogram division of the junior category in the tournament featuring 13 countries and a total of 117 judo athletes.

Tanconcian beat Korean Kim Taehyeon via an uchimata throw within 10 seconds of their bout.

The Philippines was represented by the UST judo team lead by head coach Paul Michael.

De Vera said the tournament is important because it is a world ranking qualifying tournament.

The bemedalled UST coach is happy with the performance of Tancontian and his teammates as they were collectively able to win two silvers and two bronzes.

"After this tournament merong local tournament kaming sasalihan habang si Chino at other teammates niya ay magtetraining sa Japan para sa SEA games," De Vera told the Mirror.

Tancontian is set to represent the Philippines in the 82 kilogram Sambo event in the Southeast Asian Games in November.

Paolo Lim Tancontian, the proud father of Chino and current Secretary General of the Pilipinas Sambo Federation is very happy with the win of his son.

"Wow congratulations Chino, I'm so proud of you my son," the elder Tancontian said in a Facebook post.

Before winning the bronze medal in Hongkong, Tancontian has already been a member of the UST judo team that won many golds in the UAAP.
