Nation Builders, a non-profit organization which aims to build a sustainable brand as part of its global green initiative, has awarded Malabon City Vice Mayor Bernard “Ninong” dela Cruz as honorary Vice of the Mayor of the Year for the group’s Mosliv Awards 2021.

Dela Cruz is set to receive the prestigious recognition at the Grand Ballroom City of Dreams Manila on October 9, 2021.

In an exclusive interview with the Mindanao Daily Mirror (MDM), the very active public servant admitted he was “nagulat” when he got the good news.

“Sa dami ba naman ng Vice Mayor, 1,700 lahat, ako ang napili,” he said.

Asked why he stood out among the others, he pointed out his immediate action to clean his city’s streets since the start of COVID-19’s onslaught may have been a factor.

“Nung pandemic kasi, una, ako yung lumutang talaga dito sa amin. Hindi ako natakot kung may virus, virus pa diyan o ano,” he shared.

He added, “Nung pagka-announce ng general lockdown, ang ginawa ko, lahat ng mga fire volunteer dito sa amin, mineeting ko sila lahat. Pinatawag ko tapos nag-disinfect kami sa lahat ng main roads at saka secondary roads. Mga palengke, plaza, nilinis namin lahat yun.”

This selfless act triggered similar cleanup drives in other communities.

Dela Cruz, who was a two-term councilor, former two-time president of the Philippine Councilor League (PCL) - Malabon Chapter and former chairman of PCL - National Capital Region, also provides free “lutong ulam” to “300 to 500” persons per day. “Binabahay-bahay ko yan.”

On his Vice Mayor of the Year Award, he imparts this heartfelt message:

“Magsipag lang. Totoong service sa tao. Nasa puso ang paglilingkuran. Syempre pag na-halal ka, 24/7 ang trabaho natin. Kahit madaling araw, pag kailangan, kailangan bumangon.” MDM
