MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) has suspended classes in all levels in public and private schools in the National Capital Region from March 10-14 amid the continuing threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-2019).

This, after President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) for class suspension at all levels.

Under Resolution 10 issued late Monday, the IATF-EID called for the suspension of classes in all levels in Metro Manila from March 10 to 14 provided that all students continue to fulfill their educational requirements on these days.

In a statement, the DepEd said the recommendation was made after a thorough public health risk assessment by the Department of Health.

During the meeting, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said the suspension of classes would be an effective measure against the spread of Covid-19 only if students, parents, and local governments do their part -- ensuring that students stay at home and avoid places like malls, movie houses, markets, and similar crowded places.

The DepEd directed its regional, division and school officials to facilitate the communication of teachers with the students and their parents.

It also instructed the teachers to provide assignments to ensure continued learning of the required competencies.

"Further guidelines and directives for the orderly and effective implementation of this decision shall be issued as needed," the DepEd said. (PNA)
