DITO Telecommunity Chief Technology Officer Adel Tamano announced on Tuesday that it will launch commercially on March 8, 2021 beginning in Davao City and Cebu City.

Formerly named Mindanao Islamic Telephone (Mislatel), the telco chose Mindanao as its first phase for the launching, a ‘sentimental’ decision aimed to honor its origins.

"We want the public to know that on March 8, we will be having our commercial launch. Phased launch. First in Mindanao. We will make ourselves available on March 8 starting with Davao and Cebu," Tamano said.

He added, their initial rollout would cover 17 cities and municipalities in Mindanao and Visayas.

“Within the year, we will be offering our services as well in NCR," he stressed.

DITO is a consortium headed by Davao businessman Dennis Uy with China Telecom.

The third telco, after PLDT-Smart and Globe, passed its first technical audit hitting a minimum broadband speed of 507.5 Mbps for 5G and 85.9 Mbps for 4G according to the National Telecommunications Commission.

DITO, which committed ‘near-Singapore’ internet speeds, is set to build 1,300 cell towers and base stations on its first year.
