Go reminds DOH to utilize budget properly
September 18, 2019 - Wednesday 7:09 PM by MDMSenator Christopher Lawrence Go presides of the public committee hearing on the proposed 2020 budget of the Department of Health.
Senator Christopher Lawrence Go on Tuesday told the Department of Health (DOH) to utilize its budget properly, noting that people in need of assistance still queue up outside the Senate building every day while undistributed medicines languish in DOH warehouses.
This as the DOH defended its proposed 2020 budget during a public committee hearing presided by Senator Christopher Lawrence Go, chair of the Subcommittee F of the Senate Committee on Finance.
The executive department proposed a 2020 budget of P160.15 billion, 5 percent less than its budget for the current year.
Go reiterated his commitment that as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, he wants to make sure that government funds are used properly to provide better access to quality healthcare for all Filipinos, especially indigents.
“Pera po ng taumbayan ito. Siguraduhin natin na magastos ito ng wasto at ni piso ay hindi masasayang,” he said.
During the deliberations, Go sought clarifications from the DOH on its medicine procurement process after Health Secretary Francisco Duque III revealed that some of their medicine stocks, such as metformin, will expire before the year ends.
Go further expressed his concern during the hearing, stating that while many Filipinos in need of assistance queue up outside the Senate building every day, undistributed medicines languish in DOH warehouses.
“Kita niyo naman diyan ang haba ng pila. Walang pambili ng medisina, puro reseta. Hawak nila reseta walang pambili ng gamot. Tayo naman dito merong gamot pero walang pagbibigyan. Minsan aabutan ng expiry date. Tingin ko may problema sa sistema na dapat ayusin,” Go said.
Despite scrutinizing how the budget is being utilized, Go said he supports the DOH and trusts it to spend its budget judiciously and prudently.
He added that he will continue to fight for the Filipinos’ right to healthcare access.
“Let me first express my full support to the Department of Health, to the Philhealth and the other agencies attached to DOH. As Chairman of the Committee on Health, the budget for health care is my number one priority, and I will fervently defend it as long as the Filipino people receive quality and accessible health services. Just make sure that you will spend your budget judiciously and prudently,” Go said. MDM
