BUTUAN CITY – Surigao del Norte Gov. Francisco T. Matugas has ordered the extension of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) status in Surigao City as cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) continue to increase in the area.

The MECQ extension started on Sunday (Oct. 18) until Oct. 31 this year.

“Gov. Matugas sees the need to extend the MECQ until the end of this month because of the rise of Covid-19 cases in Surigao City,” Roberto Parada of the information office of the provincial government of Surigao del Norte told the Philippine News Agency on Monday (Oct. 19).

The governor ordered the implementation of MECQ in Surigao City from Oct. 1 to Oct. 17 after the Department of Health in the region (DOH-13) confirmed the occurrence of local transmission of Covid-19 in the area, Parada said.

In Executive Order No. 20-046 Saturday (Oct. 17), Matugas noted that Surigao City--as of Oct. 17--had a total of 24 Covid-19 probable cases, 55 suspect cases, and 545 persons under monitoring for Covid-19.

DOH-13 said Surigao City, as of the same period, has a total number of 155 Covid-19 cases with only 24 recoveries, 113 remaining active cases, and 18 recorded deaths.

In his directive, Matugas said the limited testing capacity in the area was among the reasons for extending the MECQ.

“While contact tracing is saturated on simultaneous cases to work on, the current count is not truly reflective on the situation due to limited testing capacity,” Matugas admitted.

Still, the governor said the MECQ extension for Surigao City may be lifted earlier or even extended beyond Oct. 31 depending on the "circumstances".  Alexander Lopez
