The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers overcame a sluggish first half to come out victorious over the National University (NU) Bulldogs on opening day of the 2019 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC) Sunday evening.

NU took charge early in the game behind the efforts of Dave Ildefonso who drained baskets from all over the floor and made his presence felt on defense. However, DLSU cut the Bulldogs’ lead to one point as they struggled without Ildefonso in the late minutes of the

opening quarter.

Robert Minerva scored five straight points for NU, followed by back-to-back threes from Dave Ildefonso’s older brother, Shaun, which brought their lead to 11 points at 31-20 with roughly six minutes left in the second period.

Carelessness on the offensive end proved to be costly for the Bulldogs as the Green Archers capitalized on their turnovers to cut down the deficit to four points at the end of the first half.

Keyshawn Evans, one of DLSU’s one and done Filipino-American reinforcements expected to suit up in Season 82 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), scored a three to open the second half, followed by a fastbreak layup by Andrei Caracut to give the Green Archers their first taste of the lead in the game.

Caracut continued to step up in the third quarter, bringing his team’s lead to four points at the 7:15 mark.

Despite struggling on offense, NU managed to stay within five points of DLSU until Ralph Cu drained a three to bring their lead to eight.

NU’s offensive and defensive efforts ended up being no use for them as DLSU eventually came out with a 80-72 win.
