Mantilla, Galleto top ADDU chess tourney

DAVAO CITY -- Young chess wizards Caerel Shane Mantilla and Trisha Elaine Galleto ruled the 5th Blue Knight Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Monthly Rapid Chess Tournament at the school’s Matina campus on November 16.
Mantilla, a student of University of Mindanao ruled the elementary girls’ division of the tournament participated in by some of the top young chess talents in Mindanao.
The grade school student scored five points after five rounds in the tournament that featured a Swiss system format.
Second place in the category went to Nayelie Suter of Doña Pilar Learning Center who scored four points.
Third place went to Monica Loraine Togonon of Bago Elementary School who scored 3.5 points.
In the high school girls’ division, Trisha Elaine Galleto of Crossing Bayabas National High School in Toril was declared champion after scoring four points.
Second place went to Quirstine Anne Acuna who also scored four points but lost in a tie break against Galltero.
Third place went to Nathalie Suter of Philippine Nikkei Kai International School.
All winners received cash, gift certificates, and medals as prizes.
The tournament was organized by ADDU to develop grassroots chess athletes in the city.
