Montaña slays MAFS to capture MBFEA championship crown

Davao City commercial basketball team Montaña Pawnshop used their experience and poise down the stretch to beat MAFS 89-82 to win the championship crown of the Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association Incorporated (MBFEA) commercial basketball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Colleges gymnasium on September 8.

Down 61-59 entering the fourth quarter, the Pawnbrokers relied on hot shooting from Nel Molina who scored 20 points to beat the determined MAFS squad.

Molina was hot in the entire game as he also grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked four shots.

With his game long brilliance, Molina was also declared most valuable player in the finals.

Aside from Molina, peppery guard Jon Refuerzo also added 19 points for the Pawnbrokers in their win.

The win was sweet for the Pawnbrokers as they saw themselves trailing throughout the first three quarters of the game.

The Pawnbrokers, who are perennial Davao City commercial tournament champions, won P100,000 in cash plus a championship trophy.

Meanwhile, hot-shooting forward Randy Arellano scored 14 points for MAFS in a losing cause.

MAFS won P10,000 as second placer in the tournament which was organized to raise funds to help the school children of Taos Elementary School in Sitio Talos, Barangay San Jose, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte.

The two teams reached the finals after beating MPUJ bannered by the Holy Cross of Davao College college basketball team and H-Team reinforced by former San Beda Red Lions ace point-guard Pong Escobal.

The tournament was organized by Basketball Avenue through the support of MBFEA.
