ILIGAN CITY -- Mindanao State University (MSU) System President Habib Macaayong pledged to bring to justice the man who shot a student on the head inside the campus Thursday evening.
The victim, Ivan Polinar Almeda, 20, survived the gunshot wound and was being treated at a hospital in Marawi City, said Col. Madzghani Mukaram, Lanao del Sur provincial police director.
Murakaram said Almeda, a native of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur, was walking with three female friends near a commercial center in Barangay Dimalna inside the MSU campus at about 7 p.m., when the gunman suddenly shot him using a caliber .45 pistol.
The status of Almeda's medical condition was not immediately clear.
In a statement released hours after the incident, Macaayong said "all means will be exhausted to find the perpetrator and make him suffer (the) full force of the law. Everything is under control."
He also called for "sobriety and calm."
"The dastardly shooting of an innocent freshman student is an unfortunate but isolated case. We condemn the brutal act in the harshest terms. As University President and father, I ask everyone, Muslims and Christians alike, to pray for the victim," Macaayong added.
He assured that "security measures are in place and that an investigation" was underway, in cooperation with the police and the military.
Macaayong said Almeda's parents arrived in Marawi on Friday morning after he personally informed them of the incident.
The shooting came a day after local officials commemorated the second-year anniversary of Marawi's liberation from Islamic State-inspired militants, who laid a five-month siege on the city in 2017. PNA
