DAVAO CITY -- Organizers of the 2019 Kadayawan Duathlon are mourning the death of a veteran triathlete who died during the race on Sunday at the Villa Josefina Resort Village in Dumoy, Talomo District.
Coach Stax Savellano, race director of Tri-Right Mindanao, expressed deep sorrow regarding the death of Mario Francisco Marfori II, a member of the prominent Marfori clan, who went unconscious after reaching the finish line of the run and bike event.
In a one page press statement, Savellano said the medical team on standby was able to provide Marfori with proper medical attention.
Savellano said they were able to transport Marfori to the nearest hospital, but their efforts proved futile as he was declared dead on arrival by physicians.
"We are greatly grieved with this unfortunate incident and we express our deepest condolences to the family of our athlete," Savellano said.
The race director in his press statement also called on the triathlon community to pray for the family Marfori left behind.
Marfori is a seasoned triathlete who has competed in races in and out of Mindanao.
