Salubre, Atog top Nabunturan chess tourney

DAVAO CITY — Davao Region’s promising chessers Jayson Salubre and Cyhrea Ruth Atog won big in the Congressman Rowel Peter Gonzaga Chess Cup 2019 in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro on October 26.

Salubre, a veteran chess player from Panabo City, Davao del Norte won the open division crown after scoring 5.5 points in the chessfest sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Taking the second spot in the category is Jay Bulicatin who scored five points.

The third place in the same category went to Reynaldo Aba-a who also scored five points, losing to Bulicatin via a tie break. 

Meanwhile, Atog, a young chess player from Mati City, Davao Oriental ruled the kiddies division of the tournament.

Atog, also a veteran of many local chess events, scored five points to win the crown.

Second place went to Davaoeño chesser James Catayas who also scored five points but lost in a tie break against Atog.

Third place went to Ray Andro Engbino who also scored five points but also lost via a tie break to Catayas.

The fourth place in the division went to Wesly Jovan Magbanua, another Davaoeño, who scored 4.5 points. 

Atog, Catayas, and Magbanua are three of the top young chess wizards of Region 11, regularly competing at the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA), Palarong Pambansa, and Batang Pinoy.

All winners were given trophies and cash prizes courtesy of Congressman Rowel Peter Gonzaga of Davao de Oro’s second district. 

Gonzaga organized the chessfest to promote the sport of chess in the region, especially at the grassroots level.
