DAVAO CITY — Mayor Sara Duterte on Tuesday scored other local government units (LGUs) for closing their borders to Davao City residents, saying they cannot survive for long without being connected to this city.

This after the mayor learned that the reason there are no provincial bus routes for Davao City is that other LGUs in Davao Region are not ready to accept Davaoeños.

In her regular interview with Davao City Disaster Radio, the mayor said the LGUs cannot continue to shut down their borders to Davaoeños because the novel coronavirus will remain for years.

“Naa lang koy comment, ang COVID-19 naa na siya dinhi sa atua, until makaproduce og bakuna o tambal, meaning sa pagkakaron, walay bakuna o tambal, that will be a part of our daily lives,” she said.

(I just have a comment, COVID-19 will remain with us until we can produce a medicine or vaccine. This means that it will be part of our daily lives.)

“Ang quarantine dili na siya endless, ug dili siya pwede isara ang imong LGU og duha ka tuig,” she added.

(The quarantine is not endless, and you cannot close your LGU for two years.)

The mayor said what the other LGUs should do is establish a management system to ensure their economy and the people’s lives will continue despite the presence of COVID-19.

“Abi man gud nila (other LGUs) kung zero (cases) ka, you can maintain that zero kung dili ka magpasulod og tao. But for how long ka dili magpasulod og tao? Two years? Until magawas ang bakuna? That is impossible,” she said.

(The other LGUs think they can maintain zero cases if they don’t allow people in.

But how long will you do that? Two years? Until the vaccine is ready? That is impossible.)

“Huna-hunaa na lang kung ang Davao City, di tamo pasudlon tanan. Huna-hunaa kung mabuhi ba mo diha? What is important is ma-manage ninyo og tarong,” she added.

(Imagine if Davao City were to close its borders. Do you think you can survive? What is important is that you manage the disease properly.)

Davao City currently has the highest number of cases in Davao Region, prompting other LGUs to bar Davaoeños from entering.

Based on the daily data of the Department of Health, Davao Region has 253 confirmed cases as of May 25, of which 231 are in Davao City.
