Sydney, Chino Tancontian bag gold, bronze medal in Asian Sambo Championship

Two promising Sambo athletes from Davao City gave the Philippines one gold medal and one bronze medal in the Asian Sambo Championship 2019 in New Delhi, India on September 15.

Sydney Sy Tancontian, won the gold medal in the 80-kilogram division after defeating Abenova Arailym from Kazakhstan in the finals.

The gold medal is the second international medal Sydney has won in a span of two weeks.

On September 5, the Davaoeña claimed a bronze medal in the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships at the Haom 2nd Gymnasium in South Korea.

Sydney won the medal in the  68-kilogram category.

The 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships, which is considered one of the world’s biggest sambo competitions, was participated in by some of the world’s best and is accredited by the International Federation of Amateur Sambo (FIAS), sambo’s governing body worldwide.

The Davaoeña who is also a 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games judo bronze medalist and World Championships bronze medalist is very pleased with the way she performed in the two international competitions.

Meanwhile, Chino Sy Tancontian, Sydney’s older brother, was able to claim a bronze medal in the same tournament in New Delhi. Tancontian placed third in the 82-kilogram division after falling short against his Indian opponent.

Pilipinas Sambo secretary-general Paolo Tancontian, also the father of the Tanconrian siblings, expressed that he is overjoyed that his two children were able to win medals for the country.

He also said he is hopeful his children’s winning momentum from their most recent competitions will be carried over to their respective matches in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games later this year.
