DAVAO CITY -- The Pagsabangan Farmers Irrigators Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PAFIMCO) in Tagum City, Davao del Norte is the latest recipients  of the P5.9-million solar powered irrigation system (SPIS) which was recently inaugurated and handed over by the Department of Agriculture (DA) 11.

In an interview, DA 11 director Ricardo Oñate Jr. said the SPIS is funded under the department’s rice program.

He said this is the fifth solar irrigation project so far in Davao Region, initially covering 10 hectares.

Oñate said the use of SPIS can save farmers money.

Other SPIS projects are situated in Kapalong and Asuncion in Davao del Norte, while two were installed in Montevista in Compostela Valley Province.

Aside from the rice farmers, the DA 11 is also eyeing to provide SPIS to corn farmers in sitio Ilian, Marahan in Davao City and in Laak, ComVal.

“The project was already completed in August and only recently we formally turned over it to more than 100 members of PAFIMCO,” Oñate said.

He said the project was introduced by former DA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol as part of the latter’s 10-point priority agenda to aid rice farms in the country.
