The visiting Davao Occidental Tigers survived the hot-shooting Pasay City Voyagers with a heart-pounding 69-67 victory  Monday night in the current season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Former PBA guard Billy Ray Robles scored hit a clutch game-winning layup with 14 seconds left in regulation to carry his team to victory in front of their opponents’ home crowd.

Robles, also known as the ‘Ilonggo Superman’ because of his insane hops eluded two Voyager defenders to score the winning basket for the Tigers, who improved to 3-1 in the ongoing MPBL season.

The Tigers starting guard ended up with 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the game.

Tigers veteran center Mark Yee was declared best player of the ballgame after scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in their game.

James Forrester, the latest member of the Tigers, also had a solid game by scoring 10 points in his new team’s victory.

The home team started slow in the game as the Tigers were able to take a huge lead in the first quarter.

But in the next three quarters, the team relied on the hot shooting of Ron Lastimosa and Elvin Chan to pose a huge challenge for the Tigers.

For Robles and Yee, the two holdovers from last season’s southern division champion squad, the competition has become stiffer this season as teams have beefed up their respective rosters.

Despite the tough competition this year, the Tigers coach Don Dulay remains confident his team can make it all the way to the finals again this season after falling short to the San Juan Knights just a few months ago.
