After the departure of Davaoeño offensive bully Alvin Pasaol, the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors have a found a new go to guy in Rey Suerte, a native of Monkayo, Davao de Oro and former University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcat.

After Pasaol’s decision to forego his final playing year in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Suerte was picked up by UE under a one-and-done contract.

Suerte, a graduate and former star of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in Cebu, is eligible to play one season in the UAAP under a rule popularly known as the “Troy Rike rule,” which allows graduates of non-UAAP colleges and universities as long as they are enrolled in a post-graduate program.

In only four games in the UAAP, Suerte has already established his offensive dominance in the league, averaging 20 points per game so far visibly living up to his MVP status in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI), having won the award two times in his years in the league.

On September 14, Suerte came up big in the endgame as he drained two triples in a row to carry the Red Warriors to a 89-88 victory over the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers. He scored a total of 31 points in the game, along with seven rebounds and three assists.

Suerte drained a three with 15.4 seconds remaining in regulation to steal the lead from the Green Archers. However, Aljun Melecio answered with a three of his own to give DLSU a two-point cushion.

Suerte remained unfazed by the UAAP giants in the game’s dying seconds as he drained another long-range bomb to seal the deal for UE.

The astonishing performance earned Suerte the title of Chooks-to-Go Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week.

Asked by reporters about his game winning shot, Suerte said he is not not new to such situations since he also scored similar shots in his days in Cebu.

With the kind of basketball he has shown in his opening days in the UAAP, experts expect Suerte to be selected in the 2019 PBA Draft later this year.
