UP Pres: UP Mindanao College of Human Kinetics in the works
January 12, 2019 - Saturday 5:01 PM by Daniel Joaquin
President Danilo Concepcion of the University of the Philippines (UP) System revealed that the university system plans to start offering sports-related programs in its Mindanao campus within the next few years to complement the newly-built sports complex that could be the future home of some of the best and brightest athletes and sports scientists in the Philippines.
Concepcion expressed his excitement over the Davao City-University of the Philippines Sports Complex, which is only a few months away from completion.
Concepcion appeared in front of the media on Thursday afternoon at the City Hall of Davao along with UP Vice President for Development Elvira Zamora, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, Assistant City Administrator Atty. Lawrence Batinding, and former Congressman Isidro Ungab
The officials of the city government of Davao and UP met for the official signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on the shared management of the sports facility in Mintal, Davao City.
Concepcion said in a short statement that the key to building a good sports team is recruiting quality players who have years of experience in training hard and smart.
He added that he is sad to have noticed that not a lot of players in the UAAP are recruited straight from Mindanao.
Concepcion noted how the UP Men’s Basketball team in the UAAP improved its performance significantly after being granted a new training gym with bright lights and air conditioning, more closely simulating real-game conditions.
With the completion of the Davao City-University of the Philippines Sports Complex, Mindanao-based athletes will now have a chance to properly train and reach their potential and eventually play in bigger national and international leagues.
However, Concepcion also highlighted the importance for Mindanao-born athletes to be able to play in their homeland, mentioning that maybe, in the future, UP Mindanao could initiate the foundation of a collegiate league similar to the UAAP for schools based in and around Davao City.
Training smart is just as important as training hard, that is why the complementary creation of a human kinetics department in UP Mindanao will be crucial in the development of varsity sports programs.
Studies may be conducted for and based on particular athletes to help develop personalized training programs that will make them better athletes while allowing them proper rest and recovery.
The materialization of a new college in UP Mindanao could also translate into a significant rise in the number of annual enrollees, which is why the UP system needs the national government’s support now more than ever.
In conclusion of his speech, Concepcion said that UP is sure to win a UAAP championship in basketball during his term, which Mayor Sara delightfully agreed with.
Mayor Sara responded by jokingly telling the media that city government employees are now required to cheer for the UP Fighting Maroons in all its games in line with the local government unit’s partnership with the state university.
