A parking aide at the South Harbor Expanded Port Zone in Manila was arrested before dawn on Saturday for his alleged involvement in extorting around P1.5 million from a woman over the course of two years.
Video footage provided by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) showed members of the Regional Special Operations Unit (RSOU) arresting the suspect, identified as Danilo Baltazar, 47, in an entrapment operation.
NCRPO director Major General Guillermo Eleazar said the operation stemmed from a complaint filed by Carol (full name withheld) who said Baltazar’s group had been extorting money from her since 2017.
Eleazar said based on police investigation, Carol’s Chinese girlfriend, whom he identified only as Jem, had gotten jealous over one of Carol’s friends and hired a certain Neil Coleta in 2016 to maul the person for a fee of P250,000.
Eleazar said in 2017, Carol began receiving text messages from various mobile phone numbers asking for money in exchange for silence on the mauling.
Carol said she gave an accumulated amount of P1.5 million in two transactions with Coleta and several other times with various persons in different areas.
Eleazar said when Carol recently received another demand for P250,000, she decided to report the matter to the police.
The NCRPO’s RSOU immediately mounted an entrapment operation.
Eleazar said Baltazar arrived at the South Harbor Expanded Port Zone at around 3 a.m. on June 22, 2019 and asked Carol if she had the money for a certain “Eric."
As soon as Baltazar checked the money and put in his left front pocket, police arrested him.
Eleazar said a criminal complaint for violation of Article 293 of the Revised Penal Code (Robbery Extortion) was referred for inquest proceedings against Baltazar.
The same case will be filed against “Eric," who remains at large and whose identity is still unknown.
“Wala pong sinasayang na panahon ang bawat unit ng ating kapulisan sa pagsugpo ng ibat ibang uri ng kriminalidad,” Eleazar said in a statement.
(We waste no time in stamping out all sorts of crime.)
"Hindi po tayo titigil at mapapagod bagkus lalo tayong ginaganahan pagkat katuwang natin ang komunidad sa misyong ating ginagampanan. Makakasigurado po ang ating mga kababayan na ang kanilang sumbong ay may aksyon,” he added.
(We will not stop or grow weary. We become encouraged when the community becomes our partner in our mission. Our citizens can be sure that we will act on their complaints.)
