TACLOBAN CITY – The week-long police operations in Samar have led to the arrest of 17 most wanted persons (MWPs) and law offenders, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported.

Nabbed from July 27 to August 3 were 11 wanted persons in the provincial, city, and municipal level; two illegal gamblers; and four illegal fishers.

Col. Andre Dizon, Samar police provincial director said in a statement on Thursday the MWPs were captured in the cities of Catbalogan and Calbayog, and the towns of Almagro, Daram, Jiabong, and Matuguinao.

These most wanted persons are facing rape, murder, theft, child abuse, illegal logging, frustrated homicide, and attempted murder charges.

In the town of Daram, policemen nabbed three illegal fishers while two were arrested for organizing illegal cockfighting in Pagsanghan town.

Cockfighting is banned due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

In Talalora town, authorities captured a fisherman for using prohibited fishing gear.

“We are encouraging the community to continuously support the Samar police provincial office. Let us all do our part in ensuring that justice is being served here in Samar. Any information that you receive pertaining to criminal activities and personalities should be immediately reported to us,” Dizon said.

The PNP in Eastern Visayas earlier vowed to intensify the campaign against criminals amid the pandemic crisis.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, a total of 274 checkpoints across Eastern Visayas have been set up to control the movement of people. Sarwell Meniano
