Young Davao chess stars rule Kadayawan chessfest

DAVAO CITY -- The promising young chess players of Davao City were the big winners in the 34th Kadayawan Sports Festival Youth Standard Chess Championship at the Davao Jones Academy in Buhangin, Davao City held on August 3-4.
Bhing Joel Gimony of Asian International School Aeronautics and Technology (AISAT) won the open division after scoring six points following six rounds of action.
Wesley Jovan Magbanua of Jose Maria College took second place after scoring five points.
Third place went to James Catayas of Davao City SDA Elementary School.
In the 18 and under category for girls, Queen Peralta of Davao Wisdom Academy emerged as champion.
In the boys’ division of the same category, Christian Anjo Dumogho of Davao Central College emerged as champion.
Irish Yangayo of the University of Mindanao, for her part, emerged as champion in the girls’ 16 and under category.
In the boys’ category in the same division, Rodel Buenafe of Jose Maria College emerged as champion.
In the 14 and under girls’ division Nathalie Suter of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School emerged as champion.
In the boys’ category of the same division, Ryu Bagonoc of Musuan Bukidnon emerged as champion.
Meanwhile, Antalan Jayvie Marie of Antonio Pichon Elementary School ruled the 12 and under division of the girls’ category.
Josh Hernani of Pathway Baptist Academy emerged as champion of the boys’ category in the same division.
The winners of the chessfest received medals and cash prizes from the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO), which sponsored the tournament.
The tournament is an event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
